“Plank Challenge”

Fri, March 27, 2015 | Recreation

Take part in the "Plank Challenge" during the next two months at Riordan Hall on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The timer will begin at 7:55 a.m. starting April 7. Planking might just be the best way to warm up prior to your tee time, tennis match, bike trip, or other warm weather activity. Invite your family and friends to join us for the "Plank Challenge" – company is a wonderful motivator! There is no charge to participate.
The plank is a good full body workout as it helps build strength in the core, upper and lower body. No equipment is needed to perform this exercise; all you need is a bit of space. The exercise also improves flexibility and posture by stretching muscles if performed regularly. Planking works almost every main muscle: deltoids, biceps, triceps, obliques, rectus abdominis, latissimus dorsi, pectorals major, gluteus maximus, quadriceps, hamstrings, and gastrocnemius.
This practice is for anyone and everyone- there are lots of ways to tailor the "Plank Challenge" to your abilities and achieve the best results. The challenge may be done using the dolphin plank (on forearms) or using the standard plank. Certified fitness instructors will demonstrate both forms to help you decide which form works best for you. Each participant will work at their own pace and hold their plank for as long as comfortably possible, while personally attempting to extend their planking time each day.
An ideal way to condition for the "Plank Challenge" is to join the upcoming Morning Xpress class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Riordan Hall. Morning Xpress will begin on Tuesday, April 7 and run through Thursday, May 28, from 7:00-7:50 a.m. The Morning Xpress class is an intense workout with an emphasis on increasing core and arm strength, flexibility, balance and cardio, in addition to endurance.
For POA members who have photo identification cards, the cost for the Morning Xpress class is $3 per class, or $25 for a punch card, which is valid for 10 classes. Those without a POA photo identification card will be required to pay the daily facility use fee in addition to the cost of the class. The first Morning Xpress class will be free of charge as a demonstration.
