Country Club #4 Expansion (2024)
Pictured below is #4 green at Country Club, according to blueprints the green was built sometime in the early 1990โs. The white line is the original green cavity measuring 5,040 sq. ft. The Bermuda grass has encroached, shrinking the green to 3,049 sq. ft. which is a reduction of 1,991 sq. ft.
The current collar is growing on the sand mix used to build the green and is the main reason for the yearly winter kill as the sand base is colder than the existing ground and the Bermuda isnโt able to survive the winter. The reduced size of the green limits pin positions and increases the amount of wear on the green making it more difficult to maintain through the summer months and resulting in less than favorable conditions for our golfers.
The Kingswood #13 green was in the same condition as the #4 Country Club. The blue ring around the green was the original cavity. In the fall of 2018, the Bermuda was killed on the original cavity and re-sodded with Bentgrass. Our success in reclaiming #13 Kingswood makes us confident that expanding #4 Country Club will also be successful. The process used then will be essentially the same process we will use to reclaim #4 Country Club.
On August 19th, the green will be closed for one day to spray the collar with herbicide to kill the Bermuda. The green will be re-opened the following day. Subsequent sprays will be spot treatments and will not require closing the green On Sept 23rd the green will be closed so the staff can remove the dead turf and grade it for sod. The sod will be delivered the morning of Sept 24th and the greens collar will be re-sodded with washed Bentgrass sod. The green will re-open Sept 24th. For the following couple of weeks, walkways will be used across the new sod so that players can access the green. The walkways will be moved daily to reduce traffic damage. The new turf will be mowed at a higher height, frequently top-dressed through the fall, and lowered to green height in the spring of 2025.
